How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost in the UK? (2026 Guide)
DIY builders, freelancers, agencies and studios compared — what a small business website really costs in the UK, including the ongoing costs nobody mentions.
"How much does a website cost?" is the first question almost every business owner asks us, and the honest answer is that it depends on who builds it and what it needs to do. This guide breaks down the realistic options for a UK small business in 2026 — and the ongoing costs that are easy to forget — so you can compare quotes properly.
The short answer
For a small business in the UK, a professionally designed website typically costs anywhere from a few hundred pounds to several thousand, plus a monthly amount for hosting and support. Where you land depends on four things: how many pages you need, whether you need features like online booking or payments, who writes the content, and how much care the site gets after launch.
Option 1: Do it yourself with a website builder
Builders such as Wix, Squarespace and Shopify let you create a site yourself for a monthly subscription. This is the cheapest way to get online and can be a sensible starting point for a brand-new business.
- Good for: very early-stage businesses with time to spare and simple needs.
- Watch out for: the hidden cost is your own time, and template sites often look similar to competitors and struggle to rank for local searches without SEO knowledge.
Option 2: A freelancer
A freelance web designer can build a small site for a modest fixed fee. Quality varies enormously, so look carefully at their portfolio, ask who will host the site, and check what happens if you need changes six months later.
Option 3: A traditional agency
Larger agencies bring teams for strategy, design, development and marketing. For small businesses, quotes of £3,000 to £10,000 or more are common. That can be worth it for complex projects, but much of the cost covers account management and overheads rather than the website itself.
Option 4: An independent studio
A small studio sits between the two: bespoke design and proper technical foundations, without agency overheads. At DAEDALUS, a studio based in Epsom, projects currently start from:
- £695 — Launch: a focused website for a small business.
- £995 — Business: a broader site for an established service business.
- £1,495 — Signature: a more ambitious build with deeper creative direction.
Every project is scoped in writing before work begins, and custom functionality such as booking portals or client dashboards is quoted separately. You can see what that looks like in our portfolio and case studies.
The ongoing costs most quotes leave out
A website is not a one-off purchase. Budget for these too:
- Domain name — usually a small annual fee for a .co.uk or .com.
- Hosting and security — fast hosting, SSL, backups and monitoring. Our managed hosting starts from £19 per month.
- Updates — new prices, photos, opening hours and services. Our Managed Care plan (£49 per month) includes monthly edits.
- SEO and improvements — the work that helps you climb Google over time. Our Website Growth plan is £89 per month.
- Email — a professional address on your own domain usually comes from Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
What actually makes a website worth the money
The cheapest website is the one that pays for itself. Before comparing prices, check that any quote includes the things that bring in enquiries:
- A mobile-first design that loads quickly on a phone.
- Clear calls to action — tap to call, WhatsApp and a short enquiry form.
- Page titles, structured data and content written around the searches your customers make.
- A connection to your Google Business Profile and a way to show reviews.
- Analytics, so you can see which pages bring in enquiries.
We cover this in more depth in why most websites don't get clients.
Questions to ask before you pay anyone
- Will I own the website and the domain?
- What exactly is included, and what costs extra?
- Who hosts it, and what happens if I want to move?
- How are changes handled after launch, and how quickly?
- Can I see websites you have built for businesses like mine?
